Mayor who referred to Michelle Obama as “gorilla face” could be sanctioned

Patrick Rushing made news over what could be seen as racist comments about President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.  The Airway Heights, Washington mayor, in a Facebook comment, stated “Gorilla face Michelle, can’t disagree with that. The woman is not attractive except to monkey man Barack. Check out them ears. LOL.”

As it turns out, this was far from the first highly-questionable social media post by Rushing.   Daniel Walters, in a post for Inlander, cited 75 other questionable posts by the Patrick Rushing that illustrate a pattern of racist, sexist and homophobic postings by the mayor over the last few years.

While it’s not clear if the Airway Heights city council has read Walters’ piece, what is clear is that they feel that the mayor’s online actions aren’t those they consider befitting a public official who should hold himself at a higher standard.  While Rushing, to date, has dismissed the council’s (and other city officials’) calls for him to resign, they may use what power they do hold him accountable for his behavior.

Today, the council will take up a resolution that will like be a “no confidence” vote for Mayor Rushing. However, they could take it even a step farther and issue sanctions against him.

The sanctions include revoking the mayors travel reimbursement, unless it is for performing his essential duties. As well as, preventing him from speaking on behalf of the city without City Councils permission.

The council is also calling on Patrick Rushing to give up the $2000/month stipend he receives for being mayor.
