Soccer players suspended over blackface incident

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again — blackface is not okay.

Five members of the Whitworth University women’s soccer team have been suspended over an incident in which the group took a photo of themselves in blackface and afro wigs and posted it to Instagram.  The group was attending an unofficial team event at a local bowling alley and decided to go as the group The Jackson 5.

Whitworth_BlackfaceAccording to the young women, they didn’t do this with malicious intent and say that they were unaware of the painful history behind blackface.

Nonetheless, Whitworth (a Christian liberal arts college in Spokane, WA) suspended the group for one game.  A statement from the team’s head coach, Jael Hagerott, read, in part, “While their intentions were not malicious, the outcome of their actions was painful for many in our community. We feel that this punitive response is proportional to their actions.”

In addition to the suspension, they could also face further punitive action as they go through the student conduct process.
