Township trustee facing calls for resignation over anti-Muslim posts

Palos Township, Ill has a controversy.  It stems from some Facebook posts by town trustee Sharon Brannigan about the township’s Muslim residents.  Brannigan, who’s been a trustee since 2013, alleged in her posts that their schools are being filled with undocumented Middle Eastern students and that “Muslims don’t integrate and keep their activities hidden.”

Ms. Brannigan claims that she posted her views based on concerns about illegal immigrants driving up property taxes.  However, Muslims residents there say that they are taxpayers.  They say that here motivations aren’t fiscal.  They believe that these her way of masking anti-Arab and anti-Muslim sentiments.  A number of the townships other residents agree and they are calling on Sharon Brannigan to resign.  At a township meeting on Monday, Brannigan stated that she is not going anywhere.  However, those that want her out let the township’s other trustees know that, if they don’t move to oust her, they are complicit in her behavior.

Brannigan has since deleted her Facebook account.  She says that she did so, not out of shame but, because of the hate mail she has received.
